Building Permits & Inspections

Responsibilities
The Athens-Clarke County Building Permits and Inspections Department exists for the purpose of protecting the public's health, safety, and general welfare. We accomplish this by ensuring compliance with adopted codes that regulate:
  • Structural strength
  • Stability
  • Sanitation
  • Lighting
  • Ventilation
  • Fire safety and other hazards associated with construction, alteration, removal, demolition, use or occupancy of buildings, structures, or property 
Licensing Requirements
As of July 1, 2008, a license from the state of Georgia is required to practice contracting in the state for work costing $2,500 or more. Licenses are available in Residential - Basic Contractor, Residential - Light Commercial Contractor, and General Contractor categories.
