The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government announces that the annual Independence Day celebration and fireworks display on July 4, 2014 will move from its previous location at Bishop Park to Georgia Square Mall. Activities will begin at 2:00 p.m. with fireworks at dark.
The move is taking place to support the continued commercial growth and revitalization of the Atlanta Highway business corridor. The event will be similar to previous years’ celebrations open to the public with family activities, food, and music with a fireworks presentation paid for by sponsors. Georgia Square Mall hosted a successful community event and fireworks display for New Year’s Eve on December 31, 2013 and requested the change in venue for the Independence Day program.
"The change in location for the Independence Day fireworks celebration from Bishop Park to Georgia Square Mall is a wonderful opportunity for the Atlanta Highway business corridor," says Athens-Clarke County Mayor Nancy Denson. "We are excited that Georgia Square Mall will be the new host for this annual event."
Mayor Denson appointed an Atlanta Highway Redevelopment Committee in 2012 that consists of the Mayor and six Commissioners. The committee examines ways to continue to encourage development of the Atlanta Highway corridor from Timothy Road to the US 78 intersection. A special event was one concept of many being considered by the committee as part of its continuing efforts to support the corridor.
"The committee has been looking at both short- and long-range concepts to help continue making the Atlanta Highway a vital business area," said District 10 Commissioner Mike Hamby, who chairs the Atlanta Highway Redevelopment Committee. "Having an anchor location such as the Georgia Square Mall host a family-friendly Independence Day event that can be quickly implemented and attract thousands of residents and visitors to the corridor and all of its businesses is a great first step while we continue to look at other ideas to bring forward."
The event will be coordinated by the Georgia Square Mall instead of the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department. Due to budget constraints several years ago, funding for the annual event since 2008 has been provided by business sponsors and not the Unified Government.
