On June 3, 2016, the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department officially opened the new boat launch at Ben Burton Park. The boat launch is designed for non-motorized small water craft and provides river access to the Middle Oconee River.
The launch was built with generous support from the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government, Riverview Foundation, Upper Oconee Watershed Network, and the Oconee Rivers Greenway Commission. This concrete launch is designed to protect the stream bank and surrounding habitat from erosion and destruction and allows for a safe access point to the Middle Oconee River.
It is the first public access point on the Middle Oconee River and may eventually become a part of a water trail system as plans are developed in the future. A water trail is a marked route on a navigable waterway designed for people using small non-motorized boats such as kayaks, canoes, rafts, or rowboats. These trails are becoming more and more popular across the state with many communities and their partners working on developing their own plans for water trails.
