NEW!  The environmental assessment draft of the proposed runway 9/27 extension at the Athens Ben Epps Airport is available for public review. Included in the discussion of impacts are any adverse environmental effects that cannot be avoided should the proposed project or one of the alternatives be implemented.  More information can be found on the airport's external website:  http://www.athensairport.net/.

After years of waiting and nine months of construction, the Athens-Ben Epps Flight Center at the Athens- Ben Epps Airport took flight with a ribbon cutting ceremony on July 1, 2004. The Flight Center encompasses the General Aviation - Executive Terminal and the Airport administrative offices. It replaces an old terminal and administrative building that were too small and outdated. The Flight Center is the main hub for charter flights, private flights, and most UGA and visiting universities’ athletic teams flights. Many area businesses such as Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, and Rockwell use the terminal for corporate flights as well. Commercial service through US Airways Express uses a separate terminal. The building serves as a gateway for over 100,000 visitors and 74,000 flights annually. Service and operations in the Flight Center will remain the same, but will be more convenient with the considerably larger space and combined areas.

Several new areas have been added to the Flight Center, including a conference room, a private pilots’ lounge equipped with showers and a specially insulated resting area, an eating area, and a catering area that allows for flight meals to be refrigerated and stored. Wireless Internet service is available throughout the facility. Passengers, pilots, visitors, and staff will also enjoy spending time in the new atrium that has been personalized to showcase the Athens community’s music and arts scenes, business community, University of Georgia, and area attractions. The displays were created by various members and organizations of the community. The building commemorates Ben Epps and other local pilots who have made an impact on Georgia aviation. Most impressively, a full size replica of Ben Epps’ first plane hangs from the atrium ceiling. Other Epps memorabilia is also on display. The new Flight Center finally allows administration, employees, pilots, and many passengers to be located under one roof and help establish a more cohesive work environment. As a result of the new facility and new name also comes new uniforms and a new logo. Athens-Ben Epps Airport is named for Georgia’s first aviator, Ben T. Epps Sr., who began building and flying airplanes in Athens in 1907 and opened Ben Epps Airport in 1917.
