Game Warden (see: Conservation Ranger) Garage Sales – 706-613-3515 ACC Planning Department Garage sales are considered temporary, non-commercial activity conducted on the premises of a private residence for the purpose of the disposal of goods or belongings of the residents of the dwelling. Garage sales cannot be longer than two days and cannot occur more than twice in any 365-day period. Off-premises garage sale signs are not allowed and all signs should be out of the right of way. Garbage Bags, Downtown – 706-613-3501 ext. 0 ACC Solid Waste Department Clear garbage bags purchased from Athens-Clarke County are used for commercial and residential garbage collection and recycling in the Downtown Business District. Bags are available at the Athens Downtown Development Authority’s Parking Services Office (220 College Ave., Suite 400), the ACC Solid Waste Department (1005 College Ave.), and the ACC Water Business Office (596 Prince Ave.). Bulk orders can also be delivered by the ACC Solid Waste Department. Garbage Collection – 706-613-3501 The ACC Solid Waste Department provides residential collection and disposal services for garbage and recycling within the Urban Service District. Various private haulers serve outside of this area. Additionally, the ACC Solid Waste Department provides commercial collection county-wide (see also: Solid Waste). Gardener, Master (see: Master Gardener) Gardening Tool Bank – 706-613-3501 ext. 312 ACC Solid Waste Department – Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful Community members can borrow landscaping and gardening tools for school beautification projects, community gardens, or neighborhood community improvement projects. Gas, Natural Provision of natural gas in Athens-Clarke County is handled by private companies regulated by the GA Public Service Commission. The Cooperative Extension Service also provides consumer education for natural gas customers (see also: Cooperative Extension Service; Public Service Commission). GBI (see: Georgia Bureau of Investigation) Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) – 706-542-7901 1170 Highway 29 North The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is an independent, statewide agency that provides assistance to the state’s criminal justice system in the areas of criminal investigations, forensic laboratory services, and computerized criminal justice information (see also: Sex Offenders Registry). Georgia Forestry Commission – 706-542-6880 / 770-868-4041 (Fire Control Office - Winder) 1055 East Whitehall Road The GA Forestry Commission houses the County Forester office, the Urban and Community Forestry program, the Stewardship and Forestry Help programs, and some state-run forestry programs. The Fire Control office distributes burn permits for the area. These burn permits are for limited burning practice. Most burning in Athens-Clarke County is prohibited (see also: Burning). Georgia Public Safety Training Center Regional Police Academy (Athens) – 706-369-6342 55 Beaverdam Road Georgia State Government Information – 404-656-2000 Georgia State Patrol – 706-542-8660 1505 Highway 29 North The GA State Patrol investigates traffic crashes and enforces traffic and criminal laws on the state’s roads. They no longer handles driver’s licenses (see: Driver Services, Georgia Department of). Glass Containers (see: selected ordinances on page 8) Governor’s Office of Consumer Affairs (Atlanta) – 404-651-8600 / 800-869-1123 This office enforces the Fair Business Practices Act and other consumer protection laws; provides information and consumer education materials to educate consumers about their rights and responsibilities in the marketplace; mediates consumer complaints; investigates and addresses consumer problems; takes necessary civil action against offending businesses; and recommends consumer protection legislation. The Office’s criminal jurisdiction is currently limited to telemarketing, home construction and home repair fraud, identity theft, and Internet fraud (see also: Better Business Bureau; National Do Not Call List). Graffiti Reporting / Removal – 706-613-3358 ext. 231 Grass Cutting, Public (see: Right-of-Way Maintenance) Greenfest – 706-613-3512 ACC Solid Waste Department Greenfest is a community wide celebration providing citizens with the opportunity to increase their awareness of and interest in improving the environment of their house, yard, business, and community. Greenway (see: North Oconee River Greenway) Green Schools – 706-613-3512 The Green School Program is a project of the ACC Solid Waste Department’s Recycling Division, ACC Public Utilities Department’s Water Conservation Division, ACC Transportation & Public Works Department’s Stormwater Program and Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful. It is designed to assist schools with environmental education and improvement efforts that focus on conservation, preservation, and beautification. Grills Charcoal and gas grills are prohibited on balconies and on ground level within 10 feet of combustible patios in multi-family housing.
