Hands on Athens

The mission of Hands on Athens is to create a coalition of organizations dedicated to assisting low-income Athens-Clarke County homeowners in historic neighborhoods to maintain, repair, and restore their properties as part of overall neighborhood revitalization. The ACC Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) functions as the official local steward of Historic Preservation in Athens. HPC members are residents of Athens-Clarke County with special education, experience, and/or interest in historic preservation. Their duties include making recommendations to the Mayor and Commission for the designation of specific places, districts, sites, buildings, structures, objects, or works of art that are determined to be historically significant. The HPC also reviews plans for exterior changes to properties designated under the Historic Preservation Ordinance. The Historic Preservation Planner at the ACC Planning Department serves as staff to the Historic Preservation Commission (see also: Heritage Foundation, Athens-Clarke).

Homestead Exemption – 706-613-3120

The ACC Tax Commissioner’s Office allows for a homestead exemption to be granted to Athens-Clarke County residents who own their homes/land on the first day of each year for tax purposes. Each county in Georgia is responsible for setting its own exemptions. Homeowners may file an application for homestead exemption any time during the year. However, applications must be filed by March 1 for property owned as of January 1 of the taxable year in order to have the exemption apply to the current year’s tax bill (see also: Tax Commissioner).

The Athens Area Humane Society’s (AAHS) mission is to end animal neglect, cruelty and suffering, to promote responsible pet ownership, to provide safe shelter, and to locate loving homes for homeless and abandoned animals. AAHS is a non-profit charitable organization and runs the only open-admission shelter in the Athens area for cats and other small domestic animals, except dogs. The ACC Jail is operated by the Sheriff’s Office and as a temporary holding facility for persons arrested for criminal offenses or local ordinance violations, persons being held for probation/parole violation, contempt of court, or offenses committed in another county or state, and offenders sentenced to incarceration in the jail or another correctional facility. Part of the ACC Solid Waste Department’s Recycling Division, KACCB works toward a cleaner, more beautiful community by improving attitudes and behavior regarding the environment through such things as education outreach, graffiti removal, beautification efforts, special project cleanups, telephone book recycling contests, Christmas tree recycling, and children’s essay contests. KACCB can lend clean-up supplies and equipment to groups involved in clean-up projects (see also: Adopt Athens).
