ACC Leisure Services Department

The Greenways and Riverside Parks are parks that provide opportunities for individuals to experience nature in a variety of ways while linking parks, neighborhoods, points of interest, and activity centers. The North Oconee River Greenway is a 3-mile long, 10-foot wide poured multi-use concrete path that is open sunrise to sunset. The Greenway path is open to all types of non-motorized uses and dogs on a leash are welcome. Currently, the North Oconee River Greenway connects with Cook’s Greenway Trail at Sandy Creek Nature Center and follows the North Oconee River south toward downtown Athens and the University of Georgia. The Oconee Rivers Greenway Commission provides oversight for project construction, program management and the development of the countywide greenway network plan (see also: Oconee Rivers Greenway Commission).

The agency serves 12 counties and 54 municipal governments as a focal point for regional issues and as a resource for those governments in a variety of specialized areas. These include local government planning, economic development, grant preparation and administration, job training, and aging services.

The ACC Clerk of Courts provides applications for potential applicants for Notary Public. A fee, notarized application, and two residents’ character witness statements are required. Documents may be notarized by the Clerk of Courts Office, some banks, or private companies or individuals.

This part-time clinic provides some health care services for homeless, unemployed, underinsured, uninsured, and other underserved populations in the Athens-Clarke County area.

This independent agency of Athens-Clarke County is charged with developing the plan for a river-oriented greenway system within the county for the benefit and enjoyment of all citizens. The Commission is composed of 15 citizens appointed by the ACC Mayor and Commission, five of whom are recommended by the President of the University of Georgia (see also: North Oconee River Greenway).

Ordinances

The ACC Commission approves all ordinances and changes to existing ordinances. Ordinances are contained in the Code of Athens-Clarke County, which is available for public viewing at the Athens Regional Library, the ACC Clerk of Commission Office, and the ACC Public Information Office. The ACC Organizational Development division provides training programs which include Management and Supervisory Skills Training, the Professional Development Program, skill-specific classes and specialized programs requested by departments, and assists the organization leadership in identifying, developing and implementing projects or initiatives which strengthen and support the workforce’s ability to perform effectively and efficiently.

Overview Commission

As mandated by the Charter, this Commission sits every ten years unless scheduled sooner by the Mayor and Commission. It is tasked to review the operation of the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County and the members are appointed by a Grand Jury of the Superior Court. It is scheduled to convene next in the year 2010.
