Our Mission
The Department of Transportation and Public Works is responsible for promoting high quality, safe, and environmentally sensitive development within the community, overseeing the construction of roadway and stormwater improvements, identifying safety and functional deficiencies in existing roadway and drainage systems, and designing corrective solutions in a timely manner. Our staff is committed to ensuring a high quality of life for current and future generations in Athens-Clarke County by providing safe and efficient:
- Roadways, bikeways, and walkways
- Traffic control and guidance systems
- Public stormwater collection and conveyance systems
- Vehicles for Athens-Clarke County departments

Engineering Division
The Engineering Division serves and enhances the community by planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining transportation and stormwater drainage systems that are safe, efficient, and sensitive to the environment. This includes monitoring stream quality; designing and constructing roadway and stormwater infrastructure; and educating the public on stormwater issues.
Fleet Management Division
Fleet Management’s mission is to provide turn-key vehicle and equipment services in order to attain a safe and effective fleet for Athens-Clarke County employees while providing a high level of customer service.
Streets and Drainage Division
The Streets & Drainage Division’s mission is to provide safe and efficient roadways, walkways, bikeways, and stormwater systems for the citizens of Athens-Clarke County.
Traffic Engineering Division
The purpose of the Traffic Engineering Division is to plan, design, construct, and maintain all traffic control devices (signs, signals, school flashers, roadway markings); and to provide cost-effective solutions to remedy traffic safety and operational concerns for Athens-Clarke County citizens.
