Stormwater is exactly what it sounds like. It is the rain that falls during a storm. It sounds simple enough. But what most people don't realize is that in the journey from the sky to streets to the streams, stormwater runoff can pick up chemicals, trash and pollution that can contaminate our creeks and rivers!
Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination
- Conduct dry-weather screening of stormwater outfalls in
accordance with the county’s Dry Weather Screening Program procedures.
Athens-Clarke County has identified 1649 outfalls in the county
- Coordinate with Public Utilities to identify any illicit
discharges resulting from the sanitary sewer system and take appropriate
action to remediate the problem
- Inform ACC employees, businesses, and residents about the environmental impacts and dangers of improper disposal of waste
Construction Site Stormwater Runoff Control
Help protect your watershed
- Enforcement of Erosion, Sediment, and Pollution control measures at construction sites
- Review and monitor construction plans for compliance through site plan reviews, site inspections, and enforcement actions
- Handle information and complaints from the public regarding reports of improper construction site stormwater runoff control
Post Construction Stormwater Management
- Require pre-application meeting with site developer and engineer during site concept planning stage
- Evaluate the incorporation of manufactured products in storm sewer system design for water quality treatment associated with ACC capital improvement projects
- Develop management plans for selected sub-watersheds within Athens-Clarke County
- Stormwater system/BMP inspection and maintenance of ACC facilities
- Stormwater Maintenance Agreements for stormwater BMPs. ACC will conduct inspections to determine compliance.
Pollution Prevention & Good Housekeeping
- Implement a training program and establish inter-departmental coordination for the Stormwater BMP guidance document for ACC municipal operations
- Control pollutants from streets as well as from ACC-owned parking lots and maintenance yards, and properly dispose of waste, trash, and debris gathered from such street and storm system cleaning processes
- Provide drop-off service for household hazardous and toxic materials
- Retrofit existing stormwater management facilities for water quality control procedures for ensuring new development containing food management facilities are assessed for water quality impacts
