The Public Information Office has revised the popular ACC From A To Z: A Guide to Athens-Clarke County Government and Community Services for 2009. A PDF of the guide is available online in the Documents section, or come pick up one from our office or newspaper racks around downtown.
The Public Information Office received three awards in the Savvy Awards Program from the National City-County Communications & Marketing Association (3CMA). Nominees for the Savvy Awards Program are from cities and counties throughout the United States. For 2008, the awards generated in excess of 800 submissions.
The Public Information Office was recognized with one of 3CMA’s top two awards – the 2008 Green Friendly Award for Most Outstanding Environmental Video for the Public Service Announcement (PSA) "Monster Truck Rally – Outdoor Water Use Ban." This 30-second video uses the construct of a Monster Truck Rally commercial to convey the message that, at the time (Fall 2007), absolutely no outdoor water use was permitted. The judges cited the video’s creative and humorous approach to a serious problem that impacts the community in selecting it for this honor. The video was written by Sandi Turner of the Public Information Office and filmed by Jason Martin of Radar Productions. It stars former Mayor Gwen O’Looney and UGA professor Rhett Jackson and family.
The same PSA, “Monster Truck Rally – Outdoor Water Use Ban,” also won a Savvy Award for first place in the TV and Video – Public Service Announcement category. The judges in this category said, “We had to watch the video twice because we were laughing so hard the first time. This video is memorable because of its use of humor, but also creates an important awareness of the issue at hand.”
The office also received a third place Award of Excellence in the category of Marketing and Tools – Community Issue for the Think at the Sink water conservation campaign. Think at the Sink utilized a consistent water saving tip each day for 75 days distributed through a wide variety of media, such as local publications, radio, e-mail list serves, and ACTV – Channel 7 programming. Sandi Turner and Jeff Montgomery of the Public Information Office created and executed this campaign.

The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government’s Web site, athensclarkecounty.com, launched a series of new features with live and on-demand online video of Mayor and Commission meetings and other videos beginning on Thursday, April 19, 2007.
Regular voting meetings and agenda setting sessions are streamed live in their entirety online and will also be available within two business days after the meetings for on-demand viewing online. On-demand viewing allows viewers to watch specific sections of the meetings through a series of bookmarks that are custom set to the meeting based on that evening’s agenda.
The ACC Web site also features other Unified Government videos such as public service announcements, as well as provide streaming live video of ACTV Cable Channel 7 from 7:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. All of the meetings and videos will also be available in both audio and video podcast formats. The new system will also allow the Public Information Office to make CDs for the public for a small fee that include the on-demand videos and basic agendas and can play in any computer.
The Public Information Office, which maintains athensclarkecounty.com and ACTV Channel 7, partnered with Granicus, Inc. to provide the service to the community.
