Firearm License Information
Firearms license applications are accepted Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m until 4:00 p.m. You must be at least 21 years of age and a permanent resident of Athens-Clarke County to apply. You must provide identification, such as a driver's license.
The fee for new applicants is $15.00 to the Probate Court and $36.00 to the Clarke County Sheriff's Office for fingerprinting. The fee for renewal applicants is $15.00 to Probate Court and $36.00 to the Clarke County Sheriff's Office. All fees must be paid and the application must be processed at the time of applying. All applications are sent to the F.B.I. and the G.B.I. for a criminal background check. It takes an average of 90 - 120 days to receive the background checks from these agencies. A firearms license will not be issued until all background checks are received..
Licenses are valid for 5 years. You must surrender your old license at the time of renewal. If the license has been expired for more than 30 days, a new application must be submitted.
We accept cash, money orders, or personal checks made payable to "Probate Court" as forms of payment.
