new! The 2008 Water Quality Report is now available online in the Online Documents area.
new! As of June 10, 2009 The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) has placed the state on a non-drought schedule for outdoor water use.
- Under a non-drought schedule, outdoor water use is allowed three days a week on assigned days using odd and even-numbered addresses.
- Odd-numbered addresses can water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
- Even-numbered and unnumbered addresses are allowed to water on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
- Water use may occur at any time of the day on the assigned days, but to be water efficient, landscape watering should not occur between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Car washing, pressure washing, filling of pools, etc. is allowed without restriction.
new! East Broad Street at the entrance to Dudley Park will be closed for several weeks in order to complete a sewer project undertaken by the Public Utilities Department.
The Unified Government's Transportation and Public Works Department recently completed repairs to the bridge and street at this location.
The Upper North Oconee Interceptor Project will consist of a sanitary sewer replacement and upgrade. The project begins at the Bailey Street Water Reclamation Facility, traverses north along the eastern side of the North Oconee River, and will result in the replacement or upgrade of 12,300 linear feet of pipe ranging in diameter from 36 inches to 54 inches. Activities include clearing, grading, by-pass pumping, ditch line excavation, tunneling, rock blasting, etc. and will cost $8.7 million.
The Dudley Park portion of the project will begin approximately April 20, 2009 and is expected to be finished by late June 2009. For more information, please call 706-613-3470.

Have a rain barrel? Make sure it is insect-proof to avoid mosquito breeding or utilize a free mosquito briquet in it to kill larva.
Rainfall: View the According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the total rainfall for 2007 was 31.51 inches and for 2008 was 36.37, both of which were well below the 47.83 inches 30-year annual average (1971-2000). But look at the NWS Rainfall Scorecard for Athens and note the wide variation in rainfall since 1996 on an annual basis - up and down over the years. Rarely does Athens hit the "average."

The Transportation & Public Works Department's Stormwater Management Program has a document describing how to make your own rain barrel. It's available in our Online Documents area.
Solid Waste, Recycling & Water Conservation: The ACC Recycling Division has provided information on use of environmentally-friendly disposals and recyclable single-use containers in lieu of washing dishes and utensils.
