Note: As of May 2, 2007, the Water Distribution Flushing Program has been temporarily suspended due to drought restrictions. A revised schedule will be posted once sufficient rainfall has been received to continue to the program.
Beginning Monday, March 5, the Athens-Clarke County Public Utilities Department continued a system-wide flushing program that began in 2005 and was scheduled to be completed in August. The flushing program helps remove minerals such as iron and manganese that have deposited inside water distribution system pipes over time. These minerals do not present a health risk, but when sudden water system demand occurs, the build-up can cause water discoloration.
The Public Utilities Department flushes the Water Distribution System by opening fire hydrant fixtures along the system and allowing large volumes of water to dislodge the mineral build-up. Starting on March 5, flushing occurs Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Fridays will be used to address any discoloration problems before the weekend.
The program was scheduled to last approximately six months, with August 27, 2007 set as the original targeted completion.
During the flushing, customers should not notice any reduced water pressure, but may notice harmless water discoloration. Turning on a faucet for a short period of time should alleviate the problem and return the water to its normal coloration. If the discoloration problem persists, customers should contact the water treatment plant at 706-613-3481.
