Statement: The
goal of the project is to provide for the planning, design and construction
of the initial phase of a Comprehensive Bicycle Route System by utilizing
existing roadways and by construction new bicycle friendly bridges in
Athens-Clarke County. It will connect principal attractions (schools,
shopping, and recreational areas) with residential areas through a series
of on-street, interconnected routes that allow for safe and efficient
travel of bicycles with particular focus on the area within a two-mile
radius surrounding the university of Georgia and the downtown area. This
project consists of the installation of necessary bicycle route signage,
analysis, design, and construction of the river crossings at the Atlanta
highway and College Station Road bridges.

PROJECT
CONCEPT: It is envisioned that this projects initial phase will
be to develop a Bicycle Transportation Improvement Plan based upon
the principles identified within the current Mayor and Commission approved
ACC Bicycle Route Plan.
- This project
is envisioned to increase the number of roadways that are designated
to be bicycle routes in and around the University of Georgia and the
Downtown / Central Business District area of Athens-Clarke County.
- Initially
the combined utilization of SPLOST 2000 funds and Athens-Clarke County
General Funds are envisioned to develop a Bicycle Transportation
Improvement Plan for the bicycle routes that will be identified
and signed over the coming years as part of a connected system.
- Bicycle
transportation improvement projects are envisioned to be identified,
prioritized, and budgeted in accordance with the a Bicycle Transportation
Improvement Plan.
- In addition,
the project is envisioned to allow for improvements to the Atlanta Highway
and College Station Road bridges over the Middle and North Oconee Rivers
to accommodate bicycle traffic either through improvements to the bridges
or the construction of new bicycle-only bridges.
- Right
of way / easement acquisition may be required for this project near
the North and Middle Oconee River bridge crossings.
