Multimodal Transportation Center

The Athens-Clarke County Multimodal Transportation Center (MMTC) is a $13 million project designed for use by citizens, visitors, local government, the University of Georgia, and private companies. Athens Transit System and UGA Campus Transit buses, taxis, airport shuttles, limousine services, pedestrians, and cyclists can use the facility as a hub for transportation options.

The MMTC features 17 weather-protected bus bays, a passenger drop-off area, a covered pedestrian bridge connecting to the Classic Center parking deck with spaces for approximately 100 vehicles, bicycle lockers, and other transportation amenities. The MMTC is also outfitted with space for a future commuter rail platform, which could eventually provide a direct connection from Athens to Atlanta. The selection of the site was carefully considered to take into account proximity to rail lines, UGA, the Greenway, major roads, pedestrian and bicycle areas, downtown Athens, and the Classic Center.

Within the new facility are restrooms, an information center, a spacious general waiting area, and Athens Transit System management offices. While providing improved transit options, the MMTC also enhances efforts made by Athens-Clarke County to enrich environmental and historical awareness within the community. The MMTC creates a Greenway connector to downtown Athens and provides a new stop along the Heritage Trail titled “Athens Transit Throughout the Years.”

Funding for the MMTC was provided through SPLOST IV, SPLOST 2000, the Georgia Department of Transportation, and the ACC Public Utilities Enterprise Fund. Federal Transit Administration funds have also been earmarked for the facility.

The Athens Transit System, ACC Public Utilities Department, and ACC Transportation & Public Works Department participated in the planning and development of the center and site. The program manager was Heery International, the architect was Diedrich • NBA, and the contractors were Aldridge Inc. and GGPC.
