ACC Green Schools Program

Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful is the lead partner in the Athens-Clarke County Green Schools Program. The Green School Program was started by KACCB in 2003 “to promote environmental stewardship and community involvement to all interested schools in the Athens-Clarke County school district.” This program is an interdepartmental collaboration between program education specialists in the ACC Government, the school district, and local environmental education (EE) providers. The Green Schools Program works to inform teachers about the many EE programs and resources available to them, supports them in bringing these programs to their students, and rewards and recognizes teachers and schools that excel in incorporating EE into the curriculum. The Green School Program draws on the resources and environmental education expertise of the Athens-Clarke County government. The program acts as an informational portal to connect teachers to programming and resources in their community. Students that take part in the GS Program are actively involved in learning about the environment and ways that they can become involved in caring for it.

First place winner, Public Works Employee of the Year

Cecile Riker

Cecile Riker came to Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful (KACCB) in 2012 as a college sophomore looking for an internship to support her interest in community and environmental issues. Once Cecile completed her Masters, she was hired as the Stormwater Education Specialist for the ACC Public Works Department. In her current position, she interprets the Clean Water Act to community members in an effort to engage citizens in clean water behaviors; leads stream clean-ups and storm drain stenciling with children; and participates in the Smart Lunch Summer Programs to educate youth about non-point source pollution.  Six years after we met Cecile, she now serves as our colleague in the Public Works Dept., co-leading outreach events like Rives Alive and MKL Day of Service. Cecile Riker is unique in that her passion, commitment, and humble leadership style have become contagious to those both in and outside of the Public Works Profession. She is a living example of the Keep America Beautiful Mission “To inspire and educate people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community; and inspire generations of community stewards.”  We want to celebrate Cecile Riker as an inspirational Public Works professional; one whom we know will carry the torch of environmental activism to the next generation.

Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful Receives Governor’s Circle Recognition

Atlanta, GA – Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful received the Governor’s Circle Award on February 12, 2018. The statewide award recipients were presented at the State Capitol as part of the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation’s Annual Legislative Day.

The Governor’s Circle Award recognizes exemplary performance by certified affiliates in reducing litter, minimizing waste and greening local communities. To qualify for the Governor’s Circle Award, affiliates must be in good standing with Keep America Beautiful; conducting an annual Litter Index, calculating the affiliate’s cost/benefit ratio and engaging volunteers to take greater responsibility for their community environment. Additionally, the affiliate must be an active member of the Georgia network.

“The affiliates receiving the Governor’s Circle Award represent the best of community improvement efforts”, said Natalie Johnston-Russell, Executive Director of the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation, “they are doing the hard work every day to keep their communities economically vibrant and environmentally sustainable”.
Georgia is the first state in the Keep America Beautiful (KAB) network to create a Governor’s Circle Award modeled on KAB’s national good standing designation.
