WATCH: Training Guide Dogs at ACC Fire & Emergency Services

Training guide dogs at ACC Fire & Emergency Services

Did you know the Guide Dog Foundation has a partnership with Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services? The two groups plan regular meetings at one of the fire stations to expose the dogs to the sights, smells, and sounds they may encounter while working in the field as a person's guide dog.

Handlers in the area bring their guide-dogs-in-training to interact with firefighters in full turn-out gear and smell and hear chainsaws and fans, all of which may be present during an emergency fire situation.

The goal is to train these dogs to view firefighters as friendly and to become desensitized to the loud sounds and unusual smells they would encounter in the case of an emergency.
