Proposed Athens Music Walk of Fame Map

The Athens Cultural Affairs Commission (ACAC) invites professional artists and designers to submit a proposal for public art on the Athens Music Walk of Fame in Athens, Georgia. This project requires a designed template that will be used for making bronze plaques about each inductee to the Athens Music Walk of Fame. The plaques will be placed in the sidewalks of downtown Athens.

Proposed Athens Music Walk of Fame MapProject Overview and Site Description

Athens is a university town known for its diverse and creative music scene. From well known bands originating from Athens, important recording studios, singers and songwriters, the music industry and talent have contributed greatly to the identity of Athens. The AMWF will celebrate Athens’ breadth and contribution to the music scene with sidewalk plaques placed around and in front of notable venues such as the 40 Watt, the Morton Theatre, and the Georgia Theatre in downtown Athens. (Please see map of proposed AMWF area.)

The Athens Music Walk of Fame is part of a SPLOST 2011-funded Project #21 for public art and a recommendation of the Public Art Master Plan to develop a Cultural Trail.

Project Goals & Criteria

The goals for the AMWF are to enhance the visual and experiential appeal of Downtown Athens for all users, and to foster community identity and pride.

The project user group identified the following criteria for the plaque (template design):

  1. Original design by the submitting artist (or team)
  2. Quality design that may be fabricated in bronze (no paint)
  3. Minimal, easy maintenance requirements
  4. Considers applicable standards of public safety
  5. Compatible with site in scale and aesthetics
  6. May reflect Athens music scene
  7. Simple to use for each Athens Music Walk of Fame inductee/program iteration

Additional Guidelines for Template

  • Overall design should not exceed 36x36 inches to fit within a 60x60 inch concrete sidewalk square
  • Design depth will be 1/16 inch
  • Resulting bronze plaque will have minimum 3000 psi (same strength as concrete)

The project is open to professional artists (or team) 18 years and older, who are legal residents of and reside in the Athens area and ten surrounding counties. It is preferable that the artist (or team) has experience working with public art projects and community government.

The budget for the selected artwork/design of the Athens Music Walk of Fame sidewalk plaque is $5000. This budget includes artwork/design and artist fees. Artist fee includes the fee for the design itself and the purchase of the copyright of the artwork/design for future use. Future use includes for fabrication of sidewalk plaque(s) for each program inductee and for any print and digital/online materials.
