The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department announces construction will soon begin on the Nature Playscape at Sandy Creek Nature Center. This new addition is an interactive outdoor discovery area for children up to 12 years old.
“Sandy Creek Nature Center has been a gateway to outdoor exploration for Athens residents and visitors for decades” says Leisure Services Director Kent Kilpatrick. “We are looking forward to opening a new area for exploration and play for our youngest learners. We are grateful for our partnership with Sandy Creek Nature Center, Inc., as well as generous partners and grant opportunities to make this possible.”
This exciting project will include a short trail, natural play structures, and areas to explore in the woods adjoining the Education & Visitor Center. It is funded by generous gifts by two lead donors, granting agencies and many individual supporters. Koons Environmental Design and Cultivation Garden Design and Management will coordinate and build the project.
Over the next few weeks, there will be minor tree removal and grading of the site, and the area behind the Nature Center’s Education & Visitor Center will be closed for approximately 120 days as construction continues. There may be occasional short term closures of the Greenway adjoining the construction zone so be aware of any warning signs or barricades. All Nature Center visitors are asked to avoid the construction area and honor all related closures.
