All Month Long...

It’s a recreation celebration!  The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department marks “July is National Parks and Recreation Month” with a variety of activities throughout the community including“Back to School Bingo,” “Caribbean Pool Party,” “Friday Night Paddles,” and “Splashdown 2016."

Citizens are encouraged to visit local parks throughout the month of July and post their photos via Instagram using the #learncreateplay.  Get out and enjoy the park system!

Out of This World...

Sandy Creek Nature Center will host Journey through the Stars: "The Man in the Moon" on Saturday, July 9 from 10 - 11 AM.

Join us for our planetarium program in the Sky Center. We will journey through the night sky, exploring the great beyond. Each theme will explore a different aspect of astronomy. 

This program is for families (children 4 years and up, please!)
Celebrate the moon landing as we discover the unique features of Earth’s moon. See the phases and create phases of your own. The fee is $ 7 for ACC resident family or $10.50 Non-ACC resident family.Online registration is required.

Get Fit at the Pool!

The Department offers special aquatics fitness programs this July. Everyone can get in shape at the pool!  

“Aqua Aerobics” is a low impact exercise session at the Memorial Park pool.  Participants, ages 18 and older, will experience a variety of stretching, limbering, and weight routines set to music. This summer workout programs take place through August 6 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays from 6 - 7 PM., and Saturdays from 10 – 11 AM.  

The fee is $5 per person, per session or a five-class punch card is available for $20. Registration and payment, in cash or check only, is accepted on-site prior to the start of each class.

Life's A Beach...

The Leisure Services Department presents this special Caribbean-themed Pool Party, Saturday, July 16 from 6 - 8:30 PM at Lay Park.

It's fun in the sun with all ACC Leisure Services Department campers encouraged to wear their camp t-shirt and get in free at this special pool event.  Parents who wear their favorite Hawaiian shirt will enjoy free admission, too.  There will be games and light refreshments.

This program is for all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The program fee is the $1 per person pool admission fee.  Registration is not required.

Astronaut walking on the moon

One Small Splash...

It is one small splash for man, one giant splash for mankind! Celebrate the 47th anniversary of the historic lunar landing, with a swim under the moon.

Splashdown takes place Wednesday, July 20 from 7 – 8:30 PM at theBishop Park Pool.  This program is free of charge. Participants will enjoy swimming 7 – 8:30 PM. and activities 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.  

The program includes an art and crafts activity.  Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to take part in space activities with Sandy Creek Nature Center staff.   Refreshments, including Tang, the beverage of astronauts, and Moonpies, will be served at the end of the event.

Registration is not required.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.
