Are You Ready?


The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department and the ACC Office of Emergency Management will present the inaugural “ReadyFest” on Saturday, September 17 from 10 AM – 3 PM at Sandy Creek Park located at 400 Bob Holman Rd.

This special event is an emergency preparedness festival for area families to learn all they need to know in the event of an emergency. Activities include what items to put in preparedness kits, emergency vehicle displays, face painting, and games. The public is encouraged to attend and then enjoy the park.

There is no charge for the event, however, the $2 per person park admission fee still applies.

A Journey Like No Other...


Journey through the Stars: “Native American Skies” is scheduled for Saturday, September 17 at the planetarium at Sandy Creek Nature Center.

Participants will discover the myths and legends of Native Americans. Hear the story of the Great Bear and many others as we follow a year through the skies of Native American legends.

The program takes place 10-11 AM.
The fee is $7 for an Athens-Clarke County family and $10.50 for a non-Athens-Clarke County family.  Online registration is underway.

Rivers Alive!


Rivers Alive is Georgia's largest single volunteer effort to clean up the state's waterways.

In Athens last year, 128 volunteers came out in the pouring rain to collect over 6.19 tons of trash, 1.1 tons of recycling, and 117 tires during the event!

This year’s cleanup event will be on Saturday, September 24, from 8 AM -noon.  Volunteer check-in is at Dudley Park on the corner of MLK Parkway and East Broad Street. Volunteer check-in starts at 8 AM.

Volunteers should bring a reusable water bottle and gloves, wear long pants and closed toed shoes. Breakfast and entertainment will be provided during check-in.

The Leisure Services Department will host public input sessions regarding the future program direction of the East Athens Educational Dance Center.  The sessions will be held Tuesday, September 20 at 6:30 PM and Saturday, September 24 at 10 AM at the East Athens Educational Dance Center located at 390 McKinley Dr.  

The Department is seeking input regarding the program direction of the Dance Center as the founder and long-time Facility Supervisor Lois Thomas-Ewings prepares to retire after more than two decades of service and nationally-recognized programming.

Citizens are encouraged to attend and provide input on their vision of the future of the Dance Center’s programs. The forum will include ideas for improving and expanding programming, as well as a discussion on what could make the facility a stronger destination for more community members.

No School...What Do We Do?


The Leisure Services Department will host Out of School programs on Monday, October 10 from 9 AM - 4 PM. 

These programs serve children, ages 6-12, and take place on a day when Clarke County School District schools are not in session.  

“Columbus Day off School Program” at Rocksprings Park features a day of finding adventures, crafts, games, and more. For more information call 706-613-3602.

“Lay Park Voyagers” will load up the pirate ship and set sail at Lay Park.  Participants will search unchartered territories and create crafts needed for the journey.  For more information call 706-613-3596.

“Basketball Camp” at East Athens Community Center will get everyone ready for the upcoming basketball season.  Drills, games, and a lot of fun on and off the court.  For more information call 706-613-3593.

Each program fee is $15 for Athens-Clarke County residents and $22.50 non-residents.  Online registration is underway.  Space is limited.  All participants must bring a sack lunch.
