Online registration begins November 12

Get Ready for Winter


It's time to register for winter programs!  A diverse selection highlighting the arts, environmental science, recreation, sports, and holiday events are planned for adults and children. 

Online program registration for Athens-Clarke County residents will open at 9 AM on Saturday, November 12.  Assistance by phone will be available from 9-10 AM only by calling 706-613-3800.  Non-residents may register online starting Monday, November 14 at noon.
Before registering, individuals who have not already done so must establish a free online account at www.athensclarkecounty.com/leisure.  Payment may be rendered using a debit card, Discover Card, MasterCard, Visa, or a MasterCard or Visa gift card. 

Registration will continue until programs are at full enrollment, or until they begin.

Individuals who wish to apply for an ACC Leisure Services Department scholarship must visit a Leisure Services Department facility office to apply for a scholarship or to renew an expired one, this must be done at least one full business week prior to registering for a program. Scholarships may not be applied for online.  More information about scholarships is available at www.athensclarkecounty.com/scholarship. 

Individuals who do not have access to a computer or smart phone may register online using the computer labs at East Athens Community Center,  Lay Park,  or Rocksprings Park during regular hours of operation.

A variety of party options are available including gymnastics parties at Bishop Park, planetarium parties at Sandy Creek Nature Center, tennis parties at the ACC Tennis Center, and Zoo parties at Bear Hollow Zoo.

2016-2017 Junior Duck stamp design contest

Have a Look...


The Department is hosting the "Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest Winners Exhibition" at Sandy Creek Nature Center.

The Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Program is a science and art based curriculum which teaches students about wetland and waterfowl conservation.  Students who enter the contest range from kindergarten through high school age.  

Each piece is unique and is always a pleasure to see wildlife through the eyes of children.  Come by the nature center and marvel at the art. 

The exhibition is on display Tuesday-Saturday from 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM through November.  There is no admission fee.

Holiday parade covered in lights

Are You In?


The Department announces that entries for the 2016 Athens-Clarke County Downtown Parade of Lights are now being accepted.  This year’s parade is scheduled for Thursday, December 1. The deadline for entries is 5 PM on Thursday, November 17, 2016.  The parade application fee is $40 with checks payable to “Athens-Clarke County.”  
Annually, more than 60 entries compete for such prizes as “Most Original Float,” “Best Use of Theme, “ and “Best Use of Lights”  and the best overall float receiving the “Mayor’s Award.” 

This year’s theme is “A Fairytale Christmas.” The parade begins on the corner of Hancock Ave and Pulaski St ending in front of City Hall for the traditional Community Christmas Tree lighting ceremony.

The Athens-Clarke County Downtown Parade of Lights is sponsored by the Leisure Services Department and the Athens Downtown Development Authority.

Children looking at the stars in the planetarium

Out of this World...


The Department will present “Journey through the Stars” this fall in the planetarium at Sandy Creek Nature Center.

“Autumn Skies” is planned for Saturday, November 19. Participants will learn about our autumn sky, listen to some of the common constellation stories, and fall in love with our fall sky!

The program takes place 10-11 AM.  The program fee is $7 for an Athens-Clarke County family and $10.50 for a non-Athens-Clarke County family.  Online registration is underway.
