In the Woods...


Sandy Creek Nature Center presents “Owl Prowl” on Friday, January 20 from 6:30 - 8 PM. 

Participants will learn about owls in the Athens area and search for them during an evening hike.  

The program fee is $2 for Athens-Clarke County residents and $3 for non-Athens-Clarke County residents.  This program is for ages 4 and older.  Online registration is underway.

Tennis balls

It's a New Game in 2017!


Keep that New Year's resolution to get fit and hit the tennis courts. 
Programs are available at the ACC Tennis Center and Bishop Park for children, teens, and adults and at all experience levels.  Programs are available in the morning or evening and take place late January into March.  The fees range from $15-$90 per program. Private lessons are available, as well.

Lyndon House 42nd Juried Show

It Could be a Masterpiece!

Lyndon House Art Center staff will receive art work for consideration for the upcoming 42nd Juried Exhibition. This professionally oriented competition will be judged by Susan Krane, Oshman Executive Director at the San Jose Museum of Art.
  
The competition is open to Athens area artists 18 years and older working in visual media. Athens area includes Athens-Clarke, Barrow, Greene, Jackson, Madison, Oconee, and Oglethorpe Counties.  Cash prizes will be awarded.  A non-refundable entry fee of $25 is due with submission of up to three works per artist.

A special “Lunch Break with Leisure Services” Facebook Q&A regarding the Lyndon House Arts Center’s upcoming 42nd Juried Exhibition is planned for Monday, January 23 from noon - 12:30 PM. Citizens are encouraged to log into the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department Facebook page and post questions relating to submitting art work for consideration for this popular art show.  Lyndon House Arts Center Program Supervisor Didi Dunphy will respond to posts.

Art work entries are due at the Lyndon House on Thursday, January 26 from 12:30 – 8:30 PM and Friday, January 27 from 10 AM – 4 PM.  Entry forms are available online and are also available on submission days. No submissions will be accepted after 4 PM on Friday, January 27.

National Flag Football logo

Hike!


National Flag Football, the largest youth flag football organization in the country, is partnering with the Leisure Services Department to bring flag football to the community. The program provides girls and boys, ages 4 – 14, a safe and fun football league for all skill levels and is designed to educate young people about football while emphasizing participation and sportsmanship.

The league begins March 12 and ends May 14. Registration is open for the spring league through January 27 at www.Nationalflagfootball.com.  The cost is $125 for the spring season.  This program is not eligible for the Leisure Services Department scholarship program.

All participants will receive a reversible National Football League (NFL) Flag Football jersey, representing one of the NFL teams, and flags that are theirs to keep at the completion of the season. 

The season will consist of eight weeks with 14 different locations. Teams will be formed by students from the same schools and grade, giving children the opportunity to participate as a team with their classmates. Practices are scheduled an hour before each game resulting in a one day a week commitment to the league.  Practices and games will be held on Sunday afternoons, from noon – 6 PM at Southeast Clarke Park located at 4440 Lexington Rd.

An Evening in the Forest..


Discover how magical our forests can be at night at Sandy Creek Nature Center. The evening includes a moonlit walk in the forest to search for fairies and gnomes hiding among the trees and then attendees will help build them a home. Telescopes will be used to spot a dragon and lion dancing across the sky (weather permitting for telescope use).  Fantastical forest costumes are encouraged. 

“Forest Fantasy” is planned for Friday, February 10 from 6-8 PM and is for all ages, however, children younger than 13 must be accompanied by an adult.  

The fee is $2 per person for ACC residents and $3 for non-residents.  Children younger than 3 years of age are admitted free of charge. Pre-registration is required by Thursday, February 9.  Online registration is underway.
