Ice Cream for Everyone!

It's a Greenway celebration and everyone is invited! The Oconee Rivers Greenway Commission and the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department will host a “Greenway Expansion Celebration” on Wednesday,
May 17 at 5:30 p.m.

Enjoy a lovely spring evening on the University of Georgia’s School of Social Work’s beautiful deck which overlooks the Oconee River and is near the next phase of the Greenway expansion.  Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy the river and indulge in some ice cream during the special celebration only feet away from the next phase of the Greenway development. The UGA’s School of Social Work is located at 279 Williams Street.

The current Greenway system includes 3.75 miles of multi-use trail and 12 miles of foot trails, but that is just the beginning of this important green infrastructure. The entire community is invited to attend and learn about the future of the Greenway as it expands southward.

For more information on this event, please call 706-613-3801.

WOW Pickets

Picket Up!

The Department announces the “Picket Up” program for the retrieval of the fence pickets from the former World of Wonder Playground (WOW).

As part of the fundraising efforts for the former WOW Playground, between 2002 and 2004, individuals could purchase pickets for the fence that surrounded the play area.  Approximately 100 pickets have been saved from the demolition of the old playground.  These pickets, with donor names on them, are now at the ACC Tennis Center, They may be picked daily from May 1 - May 15, Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.

After May 15, the pickets will be stored at the Department’s Park Services Division office until December 31, 2017.  Anyone who wishes to claim his/her picket after May 15, will need to contact Keith Kirkland at or call 706-613-3801, ext. 25.  After December 31, 2017, staff will dispose of all remaining pickets.

Finding Your Way...

New wayfinding signs are up at Southeast Clarke Park! These signs are installed along the trail connecting the Skate Park  to the World of Wonder Park at Southeast Clarke Park.

In the event that the parking lot at WOW is full, patrons can park on the Lexington Road side near the park and follow the playground symbol through the woods - the symbol is a child on a swing. Enjoy a stroll through the beautiful forest today!
