SPF is Your BFF

SPF is Your BFF!

Just in time for summer, the  Department is launching a sunscreen pilot program to make sure that all Athenians know that “SPF is their BFF.”

This special program is a partnership with Piedmont Athens Regional in support of their  Melanoma initiative.  The weather resistant, hands free sunscreen dispensers will be located in five of the Leisure Services Department’s facilities including the Athens-Clarke County Tennis CenterSandy Creek Nature Center,Sandy Creek Park beach and boat launch, and the World of Wonder Park.  Park patrons will be able to access free sunscreen during the dog days of summer and protect themselves and their children from the harmful sun rays.  The sunscreen is SPF 30 and is a hybrid that includes both mineral and chemical components to give the best of both methods. It protects a maximum of 80 minutes and starts when it is first applied. It is great for swimming and active sports enthusiasts.

This pilot program will allow staff to gauge interest, cost, and maintenance of the dispensers. Once the initial quantity of sunscreen is exhausted, staff will determine whether or not to expand or suspend this program.

Safe Routes

Try This Route...

The Department is proud to join the National Park and Recreation Association's Safe Routes to Parks pilot program.

The pilot project developed by Leisure Services will be used to explore improving the pedestrian connections between and around East Athens Community Center on McKinley Drive and Trail Creek Park on Trail Creek St.

Athens-Clarke County recently updated the Greenway Network Plan to increase transportation choices and provide access throughout the city for those who cannot or choose not to use automobiles as their primary transportation method.  This area of town (East Athens) is in need of additional transportation routes. These two facilities are located within close proximity to each other and travel to and between them is a challenge because of the lack of pedestrian accessibility. The pilot project will involve developing a plan for safer pedestrian connections to the parks and will create passage for programs, summer camp participants, children, and families to travel safely to and from the two facilities, as well generally improving community connectivity.

Leisure Services staff submitted a grant application and was chosen along with nine other cities nationwide to participate in the Safe Routes to Parks pilot program.
