There are only a few days left before Halloween, so get ready for one of the funnest parts of the year with a Leisure Services event!

The Leisure Services Department will keep Clarke County District school children busy and having fun during fall break!
“Witches Brew Day off School” is scheduled for Friday, October 27 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Rocksprings Park. Participants will have choices of spooky or not so spooky masks and will create snacks of creepy tasty treats and play mysterious games.  The fee is $15 for ACC residents and $22.50 for non-residents.  For more information, please call 706-613-3602.

“Super Duper Science Camp” will take place Friday, October 27 and Monday, October 30 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at East Athens Community Center.  During this two-day camp, children will explore the mysteries of science through projects and experiments. In addition, there will be physical fitness activities, so children should dress accordingly. The fee is $25 for ACC residents and $45 for non-residents.  For more information, call 706-613-3593.

“Halloween Express Mini-Camp” is planned for Friday, October 27 and Monday, October 30 at Lay Park.  This two-day camp will celebrate the spookiest holiday of all. Participants will make Halloween-themed arts and crafts and create some frighteningly tasty snacks. There will be games suitable for the season and everyone should expect to have a howling good time!  Tennis shoes and clothing appropriate for physical activity are recommended.  The fee is $30 ACC residents and $45 for non-residents.  For more information, please call 706-613-3596.

“Frankenstein’s Fun Day Monday” is set for Monday, October 30 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Rocksprings Park. The day will be full of silly adventures, where participants will create their own Frankenstein monster, gobble on green snacks, and participate in giant relay races. The fee is $15 for ACC residents and $22.50 for non-residents.  For more information, please call 706-613-3602.

Online registration is underway and space is limited.  All participants must bring a sack lunch. 


Get in the Race!

Make plans to run or walk in the annualJack-O-Lantern Jog and Goblin Fun Run, Sunday, October 29 at Sandy Creek Nature Center.

The one-mile Goblin Fun Run starts at 2:00 p.m., with the 5K Jack-O-Lantern Jog starting at 2:30 p.m. Both events follow the beautiful paved path of the Greenway starting and finishing at the Nature Center.  A costume contest for registered runners age 10 and younger will be held at 1:40 p.m. The 5K is USATF Certified and is an official AJC Peachtree Road Race Qualifier.
This event benefits Sandy Creek Nature Center Inc., the non-profit support organization which founded the nature center over 40 years ago. 

All entries received after October 18 and on race day are $25 per person. Race entry forms are available at Sandy Creek Nature Center, at Classic Race Services races, oronline.  Participants can also register online at

Athens-Clarke Gymnastics Academy of the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services will host its first skills clinic.

"Cartwheel Clinic"  is set for Sunday, November 5 from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Bishop Park gym. This event is open to boys and girls ages 5-9.

The cartwheel is an important skill in gymnastics and tumbling! If your child would like to learn a cartwheel or is working to perfect his/her cartwheel, be sure to register for this Cartwheel Clinic!

At the clinic, the focus will be on upper body and arm strength through drills and hands-on spotting so the student can develop the skills necessary to perform a cartwheel. No previous experience is necessary. This clinic is open to everyone.   

The fee is $20 and registration is required and will continue through November 3. Register online for this program

A Christmas Story

On Stage...

Athens Creative Theatre brings this holiday classic to the stage of the historic Morton Theatre, just in time for the holidays.  "A Christmas Story" is a stage musical adaptation of the popular film by the same name. The musical takes place in the 1940s in Indiana and focuses on a child named Ralphie, who wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas.

The performance takes place at the Morton Theatre in downtown Athens on Thursday, November 9 through Sunday, November 12.  Thursday and Friday shows are at 7:30 p.m., Saturday performances are at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday’s show starts at 3:00 p.m.

Tickets are now on sale at the Morton Theatre Box Office, Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Call 706-613-3771 to reach the Box Office.  Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children, seniors, and students.
