Paint Nite

The Whole Family is Invited!

Need to plan a family night or a fun date?!  East Athens Community Center will host four paint nights. Participants will be given an example of what to paint and their own canvas to create their work of art. 
The paintings in February will incorporate Black History Month themes and will be fun for people of all artistic abilities looking to have a great time! 

This program is for ages five years and older and takes place Fridays in February from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. The fee is $10 for ACC residents and $15 non-residents.  Online registration is underway.

Nature Center

It Could be Love...

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Sandy Creek Nature Center will host the inaugural “Nature Singles Bash” on Saturday,, February 17 from 2:30 - 5:00 p.m.

Come meet singles in a Nature Center love connection!  Play games, go on a hike, enjoy a planetarium program, and create new friendships with other nature loving singles.  Refreshments and coffee served at the event.

This program is for ages 21 and older.  The fee is $3 for ACC residents and $5 for     
non-residents. Online registration is underway.

The Leisure Services Department announces its spring program opportunities for 2018.

A diverse selection highlighting the arts, environmental science, recreation, sports, and holiday events is planned for adults and children.

Online program registration for Athens-Clarke County residents will open at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 10.  Non-residents may register online starting Monday, February 12 at noon.  All registration takes place online at  

Before registering, individuals who have not already done so must establish a free online account at  Payment may be rendered using a debit card, Discover Card, MasterCard, Visa, or a MasterCard or Visa gift card. 

Registration will continue until programs are at full enrollment or they begin.
Individuals who already have an online account and received a Leisure Services Department scholarship since July 1, 2017, may use the scholarship when registering online.  Individuals with expired scholarships and new scholarship applicants must visit a Leisure Services Department facility office to apply for a scholarship or to renew an expired one, this must be done at least five business days prior to registering for a program.  Scholarships may not be applied for online.  More information about scholarships, including required documentation, is available at 

Individuals who do not have access to a computer or smart phone may register online using the computer labs at East Athens Community Center, Lay Park, or Rocksprings Park during regular hours of operation.

School Bus

School's Out!

The Leisure Services Department will host Out of School programs in February.

These programs serve children, ages 
6-12, and take place days when Clarke County School District schools are not in session.  

“Game Show Madness” is scheduled for Monday, February 19 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at East Athens Community Center. Participants will test their knowledge of a variety of topics during this day off program. Games will include the center's version of Beat Shazam, Family Feud, and Jeopardy.  Each game is designed for elementary age students to enjoy.  The fee is $15 ACC resident and $22.50 for non-residents.  For more information, call 706-613-3593.

“Outrageous Science” will take place Monday, February 19 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. atRocksprings Park.  This program will focus on science with a lava lamp build, games that test out everyone’s physics skills, and maybe explore a little chemistry with crystal spikes! The fee is $15 for ACC residents and $22.50 for non-residents.  For more information, call 706-613-3602.

Center for Civil & Human Rights Museum Field Trip to Atlanta is planned for Monday, February 19 from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.  Participants will experience this amazing facility and leave able to join the all-important conversation about human rights in their own community. This special trip, for ages 8-15, has a fee is $15 for ACC residents and $25.50 for non-residents. The group will assemble and return to Lay ParkOnline registration is underway. GMA Award


Athens-Clarke County received the 2018 Live Work Play Award from the Georgia Municipal Association.

On Sunday, January 21, Athens-Clarke County received a 2018 Live, Work, Play City Award presented by the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA), in conjunction with Georgia Trend magazine, during GMA’s annual Mayors’ Day conference in Atlanta.
Recipients of the 2018 Live, Work, Play Cities Award in the "Large City" category included Athens-Clarke County, Columbus, and LaGrange.

Though each city provides different services, contest judges praised the winning cities for their success in advancing job creation, housing offerings, and recreational amenities. Judges for the 2018 Live, Work, Play Cities Award represented Georgia Power’s office of Community & Economic Impact, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, and the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government. 

Based in Atlanta, GMA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that provides legislative advocacy, research, training, employee benefit and technical consulting services to its 521 member cities.

The award nomination for the community was compiled and submitted by staff in the  Leisure Services Department with assistance from other Unified Government offices.
