Nature Center

Plant the Trees!


Sandy Creek Nature Center will host another tree planting for the Managed Forest project on Saturday, February 17th and 24th from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. 

We have almost 2,000 saplings to plant in the hardwood management section of the forest with the goal of increasing species diversity of trees and other plants. This should help to create a healthy forest both for wildlife and recreation. No skills are necessary - instructions are provided.

Soccer

Leisure Services Department has a selection of youth sports programs for the spring.

The youth soccer co-ed program is available for ages 6-12 and takes place at Southeast Clarke Park. The season takes place March 20-April 28.  Practices are held Tuesday-Thursday evenings depending on the age group followed by games Saturday morning. 

Flag football is open to girls and boys ages 5–12 and takes place at Southeast Clarke Park. Practices and games take place on Sunday afternoons from noon to 6:00 p.m. The season takes place March 18th through May 13th.

Sportstime is a co-ed program for ages 3-4 years where children are introduced to baseball, basketball, football, golf, lacrosse, and soccer.  Children will focus on one sport per week and learn basic rules and fundamental skills of each game. The program is available at two different locations: Trail Creek Park on Mondays, March 19-April 23 from 4:45 - 5:30 p.m. or  at Southeast Clarke Park on Tuesdays, March 20-April 24 from 4:45 – 5:30 p.m. Participants may register for one class or the other, but not both.

Each program has a $65 fee for ACC residents and $98 for non-residents. Registration continues at www.athensclarkecounty.com/leisure.

The Lyndon House Arts Center continues online registration for spring art classes.  Classes begin in March.

An array of classes for children and adults, beginners and advanced artists, is available in a variety of disciplines. The adult art classes include “Enameling with Leslie Litt” and the new “Mindful Explorations in Clay with Jasey Jones." 
Youth classes this spring, with a grant from AthFest Educates and a partnership with Community, the downtown Athens fashion Boutique, the Lyndon House is offering “Wear It: Wearable Art." 
Thanks to a grant from AthFest Educates and a partnership with Community, a downtown Athens fashion boutique, the Lyndon House is offering "Wear it: Wearable Art" youth class this spring.   

Students will learn how to use a sewing machine, design a garment, and build a work of art fashion.  “Wear It!  Wearable Art” is offered as a Spring Break Camp, March 13, 14 and 15 and as an after school youth art class.

Dance Show

The East Athens Educational Dance Center (EAEDC) will present its Annual Dance Production at the Morton Theatre.  This year’s title is “Dance and Music of the Soul.”  

This is a theatrical dance and music production that celebrates R&B and Soul Music. The performance details the evolution of the genres and shows how soul music has contributed to a generation of artists. The performance will feature students in various dance styles including ballet, hip hop, jazz, modern, and tap.

School performances are scheduled for Thursday, February 22 at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Lanes along West Washington Street across from the Morton Theatre will be closed for school bus parking for both performances.  For tickets to a school children’s matinee performance, please call the Dance Center at 706-613-3624.

A Youth and Senior Group Night performance is set for Friday, February 23.  Special interest groups including senior citizen organizations, at risk youth and adult organizations, and agencies who work with individuals with special needs are invited to enjoy an evening of dance performance.  The admission fee for this special night is $8.00 per person and the group must consist of 10 or more people.  A reservation for these performances is required by February 22 by calling the Dance Center at 706-613-3624.  Reservations are accepted Monday-Friday from Noon to 4:00 p.m.

Public performances are scheduled for Saturday, February 24 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, February 25 at 3:00 p.m.  All performances take place at the Morton Theatre in downtown Athens.  Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 the day of the show (pending availability).  Tickets are on sale to the public now at the Morton Theatre Box Office weekdays from Noon to 6:00 p.m. or online at www.mortontheatre.com.
