Trail Ambassadors

The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department announces the Trail Ambassadors program.

Trail Ambassadors will monitor the Leisure Services Department trails and greenways for trash, provide directions and general information, and supply first aid supplies to those in need. Participants should be at least 18 years of age or older and will need to log at least four hours of trail time a month.

Individuals interested in learning more about volunteering for this program are encouraged to attend an orientation planned for Thursday, June 7 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. at Sandy Creek Nature Center located at 205 Old Commerce Road.  Please register online for this orientation.

Just Dance

Just Dance!

The East Athens Educational Dance Center will host the inaugural event the “Teen Day of Dance” on Friday, June 8 from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m.

This event, for ages 12-19, will feature a dance sampler of different dance styles including ballet, hip hop, jazz, modern, and tap. Participants will also have an opportunity to experience the drumming class.

This program is free of charge and online registration is not required.

The Leisure Services Department will receive public input regarding plans for the North Oconee River Greenway MLK Greenway Extension, TSPLOST 2018 Project 5, Sub-Project 8.  The input session is scheduled for Thursday, June 14 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at ACC Planning Auditorium at 120 West Dougherty Street.

This segment of the Greenway will run parallel along Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway and connect from the current greenway at College Avenue to North Avenue. 

Citizens who are unable to attend may take advantage of input opportunities available online at June 15th and ending June 28th.

Star Spangled Classic

Calling All Patriots!

The Star Spangled Classic is back!  This family-friendly Independence Day celebration will take place Saturday, June 30 in Downtown Athens.

Activities begin at 5:00 p.m. and includes live music by The Funk Brotherhood, children’s activities, and food trucks.

The highlight of the evening will be a fabulous fireworks display scheduled for approximately 9:30 p.m.  The fireworks will be launched in the vicinity of the Classic Center parking deck.

How could this event be even better?  The Star Spangled Classic will have its own soundtrack! This year's event will be synchronized to a patriotic playlist you can download straight to your smartphone, J&M Designs in the app store.

The community is invited to celebrate 242 years of American independence with this family-friendly event in historic downtown. This event is free of charge.

Summer camps

Summer is Underway!

It's officially summer with the start of summer camp!

The Leisure Services Department continues online summer camp registration, offering the most diverse selection of award winning summer camps in Northeast Georgia! Opportunities in traditional day camps and mini camps highlighting art, nature education, sports, and theater are still available for children ages 4-16.

Camp listings are available at  Parents who have not already established a free online account are encouraged to do so at:
Scholarships are available for qualifying ACC residents and are issued at 25%, 50%, and 75% levels.  An additional $20 voucher is available for those with a 75% scholarship. Parents who wish to apply for a scholarship must do so in person at a Leisure Services Department facility office.  Applicants must apply for a scholarship at least five business days prior to registering for a camp. Applicants must have a valid email address.
