Roll Out the Barrels 2018

Last week, families and friends gathered at Akademia Brewing Company to bid on one-of-a-kind, functional pieces of art at Roll Out the Barrels, an annual event that raises awareness of stormwater runoff, water pollution, and water conservation, all while promoting local artists and supporting environmental education. Thanks to the generous support of local artists and event attendees, 19 barrels were bid on and over $1,300 was raised to promote environmental education in Athens-Clarke County through the Green Schools Program!

Roll Out the Barrels is organized annually by the Athens-Clarke County Stormwater Management Program and Water Conservation Office, but there are many other people involved that help make this event a success year after year. Thanks to Athens Paint and Body for sealing the completed barrels with a shiny clear coat, Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful for taking barrel payments, Akademia Brewing Company for providing their space and delicious appetizers, and the Hot Fire String Band for providing the evening’s entertainment.

And of course, thanks to the fabulous artists who donated their time and creativity to this event: Aleisha Myers, Audrey St. Onge, Bird Smith, Carol Rainey Fox, Chase Street Elementary School, Deborah Manoll, Haylea Mannebach, Jamie Calkin (with assistance from Amy Scott and Arezou Taeed), Julia Wynn Safer, Kelly Scollard, Leandro Gonzalez-Gonzalez, Chico Rozier, Zoe Daniel, Maria Mueller, Maggie Seee, Marc Beechuk, Micah Miranda, Sarah Cook, and Nat Freeman.

If you'd like to submit a photo to be considered for the calendar, please email it to stormwater@atheaccgov.com with the name of the person who took it along with a brief description of where, when, and why it was taken. It might just get published!

Stormwater Utility Fee Review Underway

Athens-Clarke County has hired Stantec Consulting to conduct a comprehensive review of its Stormwater Utility Fee. This review will look at level and extent of services along with alternative funding strategies, rate structure, credit systems, and economic development considerations. There will be opportunities for public input later this year and beyond, so keep an eye on www.accgov.com/stormwater for updates. If you have any questions about the review or your Stormwater Utility bill, please email stormwater@accgov.com or call 706-613-3440.
