Star Spangled Classic

Celebrate Independence!


The Star Spangled Classic is back!  This family-friendly Independence Day celebration will take place Saturday, June 30 in Downtown Athens.

Activities begin at 5:00 p.m. and includes live music by The Funk Brotherhood, children’s activities, and food trucks.

The highlight of the evening will be a fabulous fireworks display scheduled for approximately 9:30 p.m.  The fireworks will be launched in the vicinity of the Classic Center parking deck.

How could this event be even better?  The Star Spangled Classic will have its own soundtrack! This year's event will be synchronized to a patriotic playlist you can download straight to your smartphone, J&M Designs in the app store.

The community is invited to celebrate 242 years of American independence with this family-friendly event in historic downtown. This event is free of charge.

Exhibit

Meanwhile at the Lyndon House...


Full House 2018 is a biennial invitational exhibit open to the members of the 18 + guilds, art groups, and open studio members, that  call Lyndon House home. Artworks in this show vary in media from metal to clay, photography to painting, and fiber to printmaking.  

Some participating groups are the Athens Area Arts Council, Athens Area Plein Air Artists, Athens Area Porcelain Artists, Athens Art Association, Athens Fibercraft Guild, Athens Lacemakers,  Athens Metal Arts Guild, Athens Photography Guild, Classic City Woodturners, Cotton Patch Quilters, Fiber Frenzy, Ladies Garden Club, Lyndon House Arts Foundation, Lyndon House Spinners, Printmakers Cooperative, Teen Cartoon Illustrators Club, Visual Arts Guild of Athens, Ware-Lyndon House Committee, and others.  

Full House is on view through August 4, 2018 during regular gallery hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 9:00 p.m., and Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m  The show is free and open to the public. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Camp

Summer Camp!


The Leisure Services Department continues online summer camp registration, offering the most diverse selection of award winning summer camps in Northeast Georgia! Opportunities in traditional day camps and mini camps highlighting art, nature education, sports, and theater are still available for children ages 4-16.

Scholarships are available for qualifying ACC residents and are issued at 25%, 50%, and 75% levels.  An additional $20 voucher is available for those with a 75% scholarship. Parents who wish to apply for a scholarship must do so in person at a Leisure Services Department facility office.  Applicants must apply for a scholarship at least five business days prior to registering for a camp. Applicants must have a valid email address.

Aquatics

Stay Cool!


All Leisure Services Department pools and splash pads are open for the season.

The Department has pools at Bishop Park, East Athens Community Center, Lay Park, Memorial Park, and Rocksprings Park. 

During the aquatics season, pools are open Tuesday-Friday and Sundays, 1:00 – 5:30 p.m.  Pools and the Rocksprings Park Splash Pad hours are noon – 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays.  The Bishop Park pool is open to the public on weekends, only.  Trail Creek Splash Pad is open 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

All pools are closed on Mondays for maintenance.  Pools close for the season Sunday, August 5.  

Pool admission is $1 per person (cash only).  Individual pool passes are available for $20 and a Family Pass (for up to four) costs $40.  Passes may be purchased, cash only, at any department pool.

The Athens Farmers Market continues at Bishop Park on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. until noon.

The Leisure Services Department will observe the Independence Day holiday on Wednesday, July 4.  Parks will operate under regular hours of operation, facilities will be closed. 

Bishop Park, Lay Park, and Memorial Park pools and the Rocksprings Park Splash Pad will be open 1:00 – 5:30 p.m. The Trail Creek Park Splash Pad will be open 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.  Admission is $1 per person.
