Summer Fun!


The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department will present the inaugural “Sounds of Summer” Concert Series in July at Sandy Creek Park located at 400 Bob Holman Rd.

The concert series will take place at the beach at the community’s largest park and will feature popular local headliner bands and opening acts.  

The schedule includes headliner performances by The Common People Band on July 9; Grassland String Band on July 16; and Sons of Sailors on July 23.

The series takes place Thursday evenings with the opening acts taking the stage at 6:00 p.m. followed by the headliner at 7:00 p.m.  The fee is $5 per vehicle starting at 5:00 p.m. This fee includes park admission.  Food vendors will be on site including Biggum's BBQ, Holy Crepes, Lil Ice Cream Dude, and Your Pie..  Blankets and chairs are encouraged.

Sponsors include Athens-Banner Herald, CoxMedia, Flagpole Magazine, and Zaxby’s. This concert series is presented as part of the Leisure Services Department’s month long celebration of “July is National Park and Recreation Month.”

Strawberries and Cream for Everyone!


The Leisure Services Department offers a special tennis event “Wimbledon at the Athens-Clarke County Tennis Center” on Saturday, July 11 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

This is a special celebration of the world’s most famous tennis event. The program will feature strawberries & (ice) cream, open courts for play, music and more.

Everyone is encouraged to wear his/her Wimbledon white & drop in for lots of tennis fun during one of the world's most beloved tennis championships!

This program is free of charge and open to the public.

Art for the Birds!


The Home Show: Artist Inspired Birdhouses exhibition is currently on display at Lyndon House Arts Center.

The show features a selection of the artistic birdhouses created over the years to benefit previous Athens Area Habitat for Humanity building projects. This show of fantastical birdhouses, to include a “Chinese pagoda”, an “air steam trailor,”and sculpture for the birds, will delight all.

The exhibition continues through August 1 with gallery hours of  Tuesday and Thursday: Noon - 9:00 p.m.; Wednesday, Friday and Saturday: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.  As always, admission is free.

Another Day in Paradise...


The Leisure Services Department presents a special Caribbean-Themed Pool Party, Saturday, July 11 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Lay Park.

It's fun in the sun with all Leisure Services Department campers encouraged to wear their camp t-shirt and get in free to this special pool event.  Parents who wear their favorite Hawaiian shirt will receive free admission, too.  Games are planned and light refreshments will be served while they last.

This program is for all ages, however children must be accompanied by an adult.  Registration is not required.

Big Fish!


Sandy Creek Nature Center will host an Open House: “Lifestyles of Fish” on Saturday, July 18 from 10:00 a.m. – noon.

Participants will fish in Claypit Pond, see what fish live in our streams and rivers, and learn how important fish are while trying a bit of caviar on International Caviar Day.

This program, for all ages, is free of charge and registration is not required.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.

One Small Splash for Man, One Giant Splash for Mankind... 


Celebrate the 46th anniversary of the historic moon landing, a few days early, with a swim under the moon at the Bishop Park Pool.

The Leisure Services Department presents Splashdown 2015 Friday, July 17 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. This family program is free of charge. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The program includes an art and crafts activity.  Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to take part in space activities with Sandy Creek Nature Center staff. Refreshments, including Tang, the beverage of astronauts, and Moonpies, will be served at the end of the event.
