Get in the Game!

The Leisure Services Department has sports program opportunities this fall!
Online registration continues for Sportstime.  This is a co-ed 5-week program for ages 3-4 years. Children will learn games, drills, and relay races to introduce the player to basketball, football, golf, kickball, lacrosse, soccer, and more. 

Children will learn basic rules and fundamental skills of each game.  The program is offered on two different days.  The Monday class is held at Trail Creek Park, October 1 – November 5 from 4:45-5:30 p.m. The Tuesday class is held at Southeast Clarke Park, October 2-November 6 from 4:45-5:30 p.m. Participants may register for one or the other, the fee is $65 for Athens-Clarke County residents and $98 for Non-ACC residents.

Registration for the Youth Basketball season opens September 28. The recreation basketball program is open to boys and girls ages 7-17 and will be held at East Athens Community Center and Lay Park.  The program focuses on teaching fundamental basketball skills, team work, sportsmanship, leadership, and enhancing the mental and physical development of each participant. The season consists of practice time, 5-on-5 game play, and an end of the season tournament. The season takes place November 26 - February 28 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. The fee is $65 for ACC residents and $98 for non-residents.

Athens Creative Theatre (ACT) presents Disney’s Newsies” at the Morton Theatre.

Set in turn-of-the century New York City, “Newsies” is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenage "Newsies."  When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right!

Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, “Newsies” features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman, and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots). 

The performance takes place at the Morton Theatre in downtown Athens on Thursday, November 1 -Sunday, November 4.  Thursday and Friday shows are at 7:30 p.m., Saturday performances at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s show at 3:00 p.m.

Feed the Birds!

The Annual Birdseed Sale is underway at Sandy Creek Nature Center.

Help support the Nature Center by ordering bird seed through this annual sale. No order is too large or too small! A variety of bird seed is available in multiple sizes. 

Order forms are available at the Nature Center, by mail, or online at Early orders are due by October 15.

Proceeds from this sale support Sandy Creek Nature Center, Inc., the non-profit support organization which founded the nature center more than 40 years ago.  SCNC, Inc. now works in partnership with Athens-Clarke County to support the environmental education and preservation mission of the Nature Center, a facility of the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department.

School Bus

No School?  No Problem!

The Leisure Services Department will host Out of School programs this fall.  These programs serve children, ages 6-12 and are scheduled for Friday, October 26 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00  p.m.  All participants must bring a sack lunch.

“Hotel Transylvania” features a resort theme focusing on everyone’s favorite monster characters. Children are encouraged to come dressed up in character, but remember it will be an active day filled with monster freeze tag, cardboard zombie craft, vampire pumpkins, and a creepy snack. The fee is $15 for ACC residents and $22.50 for non-residents. “Field Trip to Washington Farms”  will be the ideal way to get ready for Halloween and fall!  Children will be involved in an interactive educational talk about how pumpkins are grown on the farm. Participants stroll through the petting zoo, spend time on the jumping pillows, enjoy a fun wagon ride, and visit the pumpkin patch! Scholarship does not apply to this field trip program.  The fee is $10 for ACC residents and $15 for non-residents.  The group assembles and dismisses from Lay Park.  For more information, please call 706-613-3596.

“Let’s Move” is a fun filled day of movement and healthy foods at East Athens Community Center. This out of school camp is focused on healthy eating and staying active in a fun way. Participants will enjoy different activities like yoga, shadow boxing, and general recreation as well as learn new healthy recipes for snacks and smoothies. This camp is a great way for children to learn healthy habits and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Campers should come dressed in athletic clothes and closed-toe shoes.
