Deck the Hollow

Deck the Hollow - Extended!


Blame it on the rain...due to the recent rainy weather, Memorial Park has extended its “Deck the Hollow” Holiday Lights at Bear Hollow Zoo for another weekend.

The community is invited to enjoy the zoo all in lights December 21-23 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. The admission cost is $5 per person with children younger than two years of age admitted free of charge.

GRPA Awards

Applause, Applause, Applause!


Leisure Services was recently honored by the Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) with awards recognizing outstanding achievement.  

Stacie Norris, an administrative secretary with the Leisure Services Department, received the GRPA Distinguished Administrative Support Staff award.  This award honors individuals who have made outstanding and lasting contributions to the administrative aspect of the recreation profession.  This is the second time that a Leisure Services employee has received this award.

Bennie Roberson was recognized with the GRPA District 7 Volunteer Award for his service at the Morton Theatre.   This award recognize volunteers whose efforts have had a lasting, positive effect on parks, recreation or leisure service programs. Mr. Roberson is the theatre’s most experienced volunteer usher having contributed more than 400 hours of service since he began his tenure. 

“It is a source of pride that our peers continue to recognize our staff and volunteers,” said Kent Kilpatrick, ACC Leisure Services Department Director. “The Department is fortunate to have incredible staff and volunteers who help make all our parks and facilities essential to life in Athens-Clarke County.”

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

What's My Line?


Athens Creative Theatre staff will conduct auditions for “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” on Monday, January 7 and Tuesday, January 8 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at Quinn Hall located at Memorial Park

Auditions are open to participants ages 18 and older and will consist of cold readings from the script in individual and group settings.

Registration for the Athens Musical Theatre Orchestra’s performance of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame in Concert" is now open. The program is open to participants ages 16 and older. Auditions will be held for lead roles on Wednesday, January 9 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at Quinn Hall at Memorial Park. No audition is required for the chorus and orchestra.  Rehearsals will be held at Clarke Middle School with performances at the Morton Theatre

MLK Day of Service

2019 MLK Day of Service

Athenians are invited to honor Dr. King's legacy at the 17th Annual Athens-Clarke County Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 21, 2019.
 
In 1994, Congress made the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday an official day of service.  Athens-Clarke County is one of the thousands of cities across the United States that decides to make the holiday "A Day On and Not a Day Off."

This year’s kick-off celebration will take place from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. at the Cedar Shoals High School gymnasium located at 1300 Cedar Shoals Drive. The first 300 registered volunteers will receive free     t-shirts, and a light breakfast will be served. Participants will hear from several speakers before heading out to their work sites.

More than 20 different community organizations will host volunteer service projects for the Day of Service, including Acceptance Recovery Center, Athens Area Homeless Shelter, Athens Land Trust, Books for Keep, Friends of Brooklyn Cemetery, Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful, Project Safe, and more. Volunteers will work from 10:00 a.m - 1:00 p.m. at their project sites. Volunteer registration is currently underway, and those interested in participating can find the registration link online at www.accgov.com/mlkday.
