It's a Kick!


Get in the game this fall...
Registration continues for  “4-Year Old Soccer”  and  “Youth Soccer” available for ages 5-12.  Both programs take place at Southeast Clarke Park.  Participants will learn, develop, and apply fundamental soccer skills.  The season takes place September 9 – October 14.

Registration ends Friday, August 21.  Registration takes place at the Athens-Clarke County Tennis Center:  Monday-Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., and Sunday 1:00 - 6:00 p.m.

"Return From Exile" painting

The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department, in partnership with the University of Georgia Institute for Native American Studies,will host the fall exhibition, “Return from Exile: Contemporary Southeastern Native American Art" at the Lyndon House Arts Center.  The exhibition will be on view August 22-October 10.

“Return from Exile," is the first major exhibition dedicated to the vibrant contemporary expressions by artists from tribal nations with an historical connection with the state of Georgia.  Specifically, this refers to the so-called Five Civilized Tribes – the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Muscogee (or Creek), and Seminole.

The exhibit gathers the work of thirty of the best artists from these tribal traditions including painting, prints, jewelry, basketry, sculpture, and pottery.  

The exhibition is free and open to the public during regular gallery hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 9:00 p.m., and Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The Lyndon House  is closed on Saturdays when there is a University of Georgia home football game.  The public is invited to the opening reception scheduled for Thursday, September 10, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.at the Lyndon House.

bear at Bear Hollow Zoo

Zoo Day 2015


Make tracks to Bear Hollow Zoo in Memorial Park for  “Zooniversity” at Zoo Day 2015 on Saturday, August 29 from 10:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.  

This annual event features a special "back to school" theme in which children will learn all about animals and zoo keeping. Children can complete activities to master all the necessary zoo keeper skills, earn grades for their zoo keeper report card, and graduate with an honorary degree – a BHZ in Zoo Keeping.  Other activities include arts and crafts, concessions, exhibitors, and discussions regarding zoo animals. This is a family-friendly event. 

The fee for this event is $2 per person for Athens-Clarke County residents and $3 per person for non-residents.   Children younger than the age of two are admitted free of charge.

Classic City Majorettes performing

Fun!


Twirl with the best with The Classic City Majorettes who offer instruction in dance-twirling, strutting, marching technique and more

Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in community performances such as the Athens Annual Downtown Parade of Lights, the Watkinsville Christmas Parade, and UGA Men and Women’s Basketball games.

This program is for girls ages 5 years and older and is held at the Bishop Park Gym. Fall session dates are September 8 – November 10.   Classes are held Tuesday evenings 5:45 – 6:45 p.m. for beginner students ages 5 and older and returning students ages 5-8.  Previous students ages 9 and older meet from 6:45 – 7:45 p.m.

Registration is underway at the Bishop Park gym and takes place Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The fee is $65 per person for Athens-Clarke County residents and $80 per person for non-county residents. Batons and uniforms are extra and will be ordered at the first class.

Where is My Tiara?!!


The  Leisure Services Department will host  “Princess Tea Party” on Saturday, September 12  from 9:00 a.m. – noon at Memorial Park.

Cinderella, Diana, Grace, oh my!  Girls, ages 2-10 are encouraged to unleash their inner princesses and attend the “Princess Tea Party." The event will include many of your favorite princesses--with royal schedules these days, you never know who will arrive! 

All attendees are encouraged to come dressed as princesses.  Light refreshments will be served.  
The program admission fee is $10 per child.

Pre-registration is required by Friday September 4 and is accepted by phone or in person at the Memorial Park office, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  Space is limited.
