It's Almost Time to Roll Out the Barrels

The Athens-Clarke County Stormwater Management Program and ACC Water Conservation Office will co-host the ninth annual Roll Out the Barrels fundraiser on Thursday, May 23 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at The Foundry (295 E. Dougherty Street). The event will feature a silent auction of 16 unique rain barrels painted by local artists, hors d’oeuvres, and live music. Roll Out the Barrels raises money to support the ACC Green Schools Program, an initiative that encourages environmental education in Athens-Clarke County schools.

Water pollution is a serious problem in Athens-Clarke County and green infrastructure, such as rain barrels and other rain harvesters, are an important component in addressing that problem. Rain barrels are easy-to-install and can be used to protect water by both reducing runoff and reducing the need to pull from city water supplies for lawn-care and car washing.

For more information about the event, visit www.rolloutthebarrels.org. Follow Athens-Clarke County Stormwater on Facebook (@StormwaterACC) to view the barrels and vote on your favorite. We hope to see you at The Foundry on May 23!

Celebrating National Public Works Week

Athens-Clarke County, along with municipalities across the country, will celebrate National Public Works Week from May 19 to May 25. This week, sponsored by the American Public Works Association (APWA), is meant to celebrate the men and women across North America who provide and maintain the infrastructure and services collectively known as public works. Public Works professionals use this week to energize and educate the public on the importance of public works to their daily lives: planning, building, managing and operating at the heart of their local communities to improve everyday quality of life. In Athens, “Public Works” includes our Streets and Drainage Division, Traffic Engineering Division, Engineering Division, Stormwater Management Program, Landscape Management Division, Fleet Management Division, Public Utilities Department, Solid Waste Department, and Athens Transit services.

In honor of Public Works Week, Athens-Clarke County Unified Government is sponsoring a Rolling Truck Tour where public works trucks and equipment will travel to several local schools, including Alps Road Elementary, Athens Montessori, Chase Street Elementary, Cleveland Road Elementary, J. J. Harris Elementary, Oglethorpe Avenue Elementary, St. Joseph Catholic School, Whit Davis Elementary, and Kaleidoscope Montessori School. Students will get to see, hear, and touch the trucks, as well as learn about the hardworking individuals who operate them.
