Fireworks!

Calling all patriots to gather in downtown Athens for the Star Spangled Classic!  This family friendly Independence Day celebration will take place Saturday, June 29 in downtown Athens on Clayton Street, between College Avenue and Thomas Street.

Festival activities begin at 5:00 p.m. and include live music from the Funk Brotherhood, children's activities led by Ladybug Events, and local dessert vendors Hokulia Shave Ice, Kona Ice, Lil Ice Cream Dude, and La Micochana es Natural. The highlight of the evening will be a fabulous fireworks display scheduled for approximately 9:30 p.m. The fireworks will be synchronized to patriotic music that can be downloaded, free of charge, through the J&M Displays app.

The community is invited to celebrate 243 years of American independence with this family friendly event in historic downtown.

The event is sponsored by The Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County, Athens law firm Blasingame, Burch, Garrard, & Ashley, Power 100.1, Flagpole, Synovus, HealthMarkets, Athens Downtown Development Authority, and American Pest Control.

The Lyndon House Arts Center hosts Raucous,  This exhibition is on view through August 3, 2019.  Gallery hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 9:00 p.m., and Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Raucous, features work by Kelly Boehmer, Jaime Bull, Christina Foard, Vivian Liddell, and Erin McIntosh. These five women are all working to explode power structures with color and fiber. Exhibiting artist, Kelly Boehmer, will lead a gallery talk about her work and process on August 3 at 2:00 p.m.

All exhibits are free and open to the public.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Mud Day

Mud!

The Leisure Services Department will present Celebrate Mud Day program at Sandy Creek Nature Center.

This special family program is scheduled for Saturday, June 22 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.  Participants will play in the mud!  Animals use mud to help build their homes or to keep cool when it is hot.  Appreciate all the fun that mud has to offer.  Dress to get muddy.   

The program is for all ages and is free of charge.  Registration is not required.

Shop local every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. - noon at the Athens Farmers Market at Bishop Park.

The Athens Farmers Market fosters a dynamic economic and educational connection between community members, farmers, and artisans by providing a marketplace for food grown locally using sustainable farming methods and for locally produced hand crafted goods and prepared foods

The Leisure Services Department will observe the Independence Day holiday on Thursday, July 4.  Parks will operate under regular hours of operation, facilities will be closed. 

Bishop Park, Lay Park, and Memorial Park pools and the Rocksprings Park pool and Splash Pad will be open 1:00 – 5:30 p.m. The Trail Creek Park Splash Pad will be open 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.  Admission is $1 per person.  

All facilities and parks will re-open Friday, July 5 under regular hours of operation.
